66. CAD/CAM in removable partial dentures fabrication.

Explains how digital technology is applied to removable partial dentures, from intraoral or cast scanning through virtual surveying and design of rests, clasps and connectors to manufacture by 3D printing, laser melting or milling. A workflow picture and tables set out the six steps, the framework materials such as cobalt-chromium, titanium and PEEK, and the advantages and limits compared with conventional methods. It closes by noting that the classical design rules still apply.

Introduction

Digital technology now covers removable partial dentures too. The cast is scanned, surveying and design happen on screen, and the framework is printed or milled, replacing block-out wax, agar duplication and the refractory cast.

Advantages and limits

The design rules don't change: rests on every abutment, rigid major connector, correct clasp undercuts, open gingival margins and one path of insertion. The computer only makes them faster and more precise.
