11. Cranial base, external surface. Mandibule

Covers the four parts of the external surface of the temporal bone, namely the squamous, tympanic, petrous and mastoid portions, followed by the mandible: its body, alveolar part, base and ramus, with the coronoid and condylar processes and their muscle or joint links. It also describes the mandible's external and internal surfaces, including the mental and mandibular foramina and the submandibular and sublingual fossae, then ends with the hyoid bone, its position and attachments.

CRANIAL BASE

  • The bones of the cranial base are:
  • Occipital bone
  • Sphenoid bone
  • Temporal bone
  • Ethmoid bone.

Temporal Bone:

  • located on the lateral aspect of the skull

External Surface:

Consists of 4 parts:

  1. 1. Squamous Portion: largest & most superior
  2. 2. Tympanic Part: including structures of the middle ear
  3. 3. Petrous Part: inferiorly.
  4. 4. Mastoid Part: posterior & inferiorly (behind the external ear)

Internal Structure:

11 cont.

MANDIBLE

  • The mandible is a horseshoe shaped mobile bone .
  • Consists of 2 parts :
  • Body
  • → the alveolar part
  • → the base of mandible .
  1. 2. Ramus

Coronoid process → attachment site for the temporalis muscle .

condylar process . ↳ articulates with the articular tubercle of the temporal bone .

  • External Surface :

Mental foramen ↳ allows for the passage of nerves & vessels to the lower lip & chin region

  • Internal Surface :

Mandibular foramen: An entrance to the mandibular canal , which contains the inf. alveolar n. & blood vessels .

Submandibular fossa: contains the submandibular gland .

Mylohyoid line ↳ attachment site for mylohyoid m .

Sublingual fossa → Contains the sublingual gland .
