Anatomy (Bones and Muscles) · MU Sofia

49. Muscles of thigh. Fascia lata.

Covers the muscles of the thigh grouped by the anterior, posterior and medial compartments, giving for each muscle its origin, insertion, innervation and action, with the quadriceps shown as four named heads. It then describes the fascia lata: its proximal, dorsal, distal and lateral attachments, the sheaths it forms around named structures, and the saphenous opening with its cribriform covering.

  • Origin - Iliac crest, iliac fossa, ala of sacrum, anterior sacroiliac ligaments
  • Insertion - Lesser trochanter/tendon of psoas major
  • Innervation - Femoral nerve
  • Action - Flexes thigh at hip and stabilizes hip joint

3 Sartorius m.

  • Origin - Anterior superior iliac spine/notch below it
  • Insertion - Superior medial surface of tibia
  • Innervation - Femoral nerve
  • Action - Flexion, abduction, lateral rotation of thigh and flexion at knee join

4 Quadriceps m. (4 muscles)

→ N: Femoral n.

4.1 Rectus femoris m.

(1st head) (2nd head)

  • Origin - Anterior inferior iliac spine, ilium superior to acetabulum
  • Insertion - Base of patella via quadriceps tendon and tibial tuberosity via patellar ligament
  • Innervation - Femoral nerve
  • Action - Extension of leg at knee joint, flexes thigh, stabilizes hip joint

4.2 Vastus lateralis

  • Origin - Greater trochanter/lateral lip of linea aspera
  • Insertion - Base of patella via quadriceps tendon and tibial tuberosity via patellar ligament
  • Insertion - Tibia and patella by lateral patellar retinaculum
  • Innervation - Femoral nerve
  • Action - Extension of leg at knee joint

4.3 Vastus medialis (2 heads)

  • Origin - Intertrochanteric line, medial lip of linea aspera
  • Insertion - Base of patella via quadriceps tendon and tibial tuberosity via patellar ligament
  • Insertion - Tibia and patella by medial patellar retinaculum
  • Innervation - Femoral nerve
  • Action - Extension of leg at knee joint

4.4 Vastus Intermedius

→ beneath Rectus femoris m.

  • Origin - Anterior and lateral surface of femur
  • Insertion - Base of patella via quadriceps tendon and tibial tuberosity via patellar ligament
