Anatomy (Cardiovascular system) · MU Sofia

118. Radial and ulnar arteries.

Explains how the brachial artery divides at the cubital fossa into the radial and ulnar arteries, then describes the course of each down the forearm. Lists the radial artery's branches, including the recurrent, carpal, superficial and deep palmar vessels, and notes which digits it supplies. Also covers the ulnar artery's relations to surrounding muscles and nerves, its recurrent and interosseous branches, and its carpal and palmar branches.

RADIAL & ULNAR ARTERIES

  • At the cubital fossa the brachial artery bifurcates into Radial and Ulnar arteries.

S: the forearm.

  • Radial art. runs on the lateral aspect of the forearm before it reaches the wrist and branches out to supply the hand.
  • Proximally runs under brachioradialis and then lies lateral to flexor carpi radialis muscle.

Branches

  • Muscular branches
  • S: Muscles of the posterior compartment of the forearm.
  • Radial Recurrent artery
  • S: Elbow joint.
  • Make anastamoses with Radial collateral artery.
  • Palmar carpal art.
  • S: carpal bones & their joints.
  • Make anastomosis with Palmar carpal art. From Ulnar art. and anterior interosseus arteries.
  • Dorsal Carpal Artery.
  • runs medially across the wrist
  • „ „ with dorsal carpal art. from ulnar art. + post. interosseous arteries.
  • Superficial palmar art.
  • Completes the lateral part of the superficial palmar arch.
  • Deep palmar branch.
  • * direct continuation of radial artery.

Branches in the hand:

The radial artery (only) supplies the thumb + ½ index finger.
