Anatomy Bones and Muscles · MU Pleven

183. Autonomic plexuses and ganglia in the region of the thoracic and abdominal cavities.

Covers sensory receptors, classified by location (exteroreceptors, proprioreceptors, enteroreceptors) and by structure (free and encapsulated endings). Free endings are described through pain receptors and thermoreceptors, with their structure, function and sites, and a picture is included. Encapsulated endings follow, covering Meissner's, Pacinian and Ruffini's corpuscles, each with structure, function and location. The topic is sensory receptors rather than autonomic plexuses.

Topic 182 of 236 in the MU Pleven syllabus for Anatomy Bones and Muscles (Medicine, Year 2). The free AceMed note covers it in 4 sections, about 368 words (3 min of reading), with 15 flashcards.

In this note

  1. SENSORY RECEPTORS (nerve endings)
  2. Types of sensory receptors
  3. Free nerve endings
  4. Encapsulated nerve endings

Types of sensory receptors

Based on the location:

  1. 1-Exteroreceptors: (Superficial receptors; from the surface of the body, mainly the skin) detect pain, temperature and fine touch.
  2. 2-Proprioreceptors: detect sense of position, movement, pressure and vibration (physical state of the body), present mainly in musculo-skeletal system.
  3. 3- Enteroreceptors: from the internal organs; viscera.

Based on the structure:

  1. 1. Free nerve endings
  2. 2. Encapsulated endings.

Free nerve endings

↳ = naked unmyelinated

1. Pain Receptors :

A- Structure:

Naked nerve endings, penetrate basement membrane, branch in between epithelial cells.

B- Function: of the dermis

Carry pain sensation (nociceptors).

C- Site:

  1. 1- Epithelium: skin up to granular layer, cornea& buccal mucosa.
  2. 2- CT of tympanic membrane& dental pulp.
  3. 3- Muscle, joints, bone& viscera.

2. Thermoreceptors :

A- Structure:

Naked nerve endings, ramify in the papillary layer of the dermis at dermo-epidermal junction, parallel to the skin surface.

B- Function:

Carry temperature sensation.

C-Site:

The papillary layer of the dermis at dermo-epidermal junction.
