Anatomy Bones and Muscles · MU Pleven

27. Masticatory muscles

Covers the four muscles of mastication: masseter, temporalis, medial pterygoid and lateral pterygoid. For each, the note gives origin, insertion, innervation from the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve, blood supply and function, with a summary table of all four. It also notes the developmental origin from the first pharyngeal arch and that the masseter has a superficial and deep layer.

  1. MASTICATORY MUSCLES
  2. General features:

General features:

  • They are developed from the 1st pharyngeal arch.
  • The main function is to facilitate the movement of the jaw during mastication & other oral activities.
  • They are innervated by the mandibular division (V3) of the trigeminal n.(V)
