Anatomy Bones and Muscles · MU Pleven

43. Muscles of the thigh . Thigh fascia

Covers the muscles of the thigh by compartment: the anterior group with psoas major, iliacus, sartorius and the four quadriceps heads, the posterior hamstring group, and the medial adductor group with pectineus, gracilis and obturator externus. Each muscle is listed with origin, insertion, innervation and action. It then describes the fascia lata, its attachments, the fibrous sheaths it forms, and the saphenous opening covered by cribriform fascia.

Anterior compartment :

① Psoas major m.

  • Origin - Transverse processes of lumbar vertebra and bodies, IV discs
  • Insertion - Lesser trochanter
  • Innervation - Anterior rami of lumbar nerves
  • Action - Flexes thigh at hip and stabilizes hip joint

② iliacus m

  • Origin - Iliac crest, iliac fossa, ala of sacrum, anterior sacroiliac ligaments
  • Insertion - Lesser trochanter/tendon of psoas major
  • Innervation - Femoral nerve
  • Action - Flexes thigh at hip and stabilizes hip joint

③ Sartorius m.

  • Origin - Anterior superior iliac spine/notch below it
  • Insertion - Superior medial surface of tibia
  • Innervation - Femoral nerve
  • Action - Flexion, abduction, lateral rotation of thigh and flexion at knee join

④ Quadriceps m. (4 muscles) → N: Femoral n.

4.1 Rectus femoris m. (1st head) (2nd head)

  • Origin - Anterior inferior iliac spine, superior to acetabulum
  • Insertion - Base of patella via quadriceps tendon and tibial tuberosity via patellar ligament
  • Innervation - Femoral nerve
  • Action - Extension of leg at knee joint, flexes thigh, stabilizes hip joint

4.2 Vastus lateralis (1st head) (2nd head)

  • Origin - Greater trochanter/lateral lip of linea aspera
  • Insertion - Base of patella via quadriceps tendon and tibial tuberosity via patellar ligament
  • Insertion - Tibia and patella by lateral patellar retinaculum
  • Innervation - Femoral nerve
  • Action - Extension of leg at knee joint

4.3 Vastus medialis (2 heads)

  • Origin - Intertrochanteric line, medial lip of linea aspera
  • Insertion - Base of patella via quadriceps tendon and tibial tuberosity via patellar ligament
  • Insertion - Tibia and patella by medial patellar retinaculum
  • Innervation - Femoral nerve
  • Action - Extension of leg at knee joint

4.4 Vastus Intermedius beneath Rectus femoris m.

  • Origin - Anterior and lateral surface of femur
  • Insertion - Base of patella via quadriceps tendon and tibial tuberosity via patellar ligament
