96. Aorta – general review

Covers the aorta's segments in order: the ascending aorta leaving the left ventricle, the aortic arch, and the descending aorta split into thoracic and abdominal parts, with levels and passages through the mediastinum and diaphragm. Also lists the coronary arteries arising from the aortic sinuses, and the branches of the arch and thoracic aorta, set out as nested outlines.

AORTA

→ The largest and longest artery of the human body

  1. 1 Ascending aorta (aorta ascendens) – T4–T3
  • – arises from the left ventricle and continues as the aortic arch in the superior mediastinum
  1. 2 Aortic arch (arcus aortae) – to the top of T2
  • – passes dorsally and to the left in the superior mediastinum
  1. 3 Descending aorta (aorta descendens) – T3–L4
  2. 3.1 Thoracic aorta (aorta thoracica) – T3–T12
  • – passes on the left side of the vertebral column and then in front of vertebrae in the inferior mediastinum
  • – passes through the aortic hiatus of the diaphragm at the level of T12 and changes here into the abdominal aorta
  1. 3.2 Abdominal aorta (aorta abdominalis) – T12–L4
  • – passes in front of the vertebral column inside the retroperitoneal space
  • – bifurcates into the right and left common iliac arteries at the level of L4
