SYSTEM OF THE HEPATIC PORTAL
- The portal venous system
- Portal vein
- Splenic vein
- Mesentric veins
neck of pancreas (+)
- The abdominal part of gut tube, spleen, pancreas, and gall bladder are drained by the portal venous system.
- The portal venous syste delivers blood from these structures to liver to pass through hepatic sinusoids, then to the hepatic veins wich return the venous blood to the inferior vena cava just below the diaphragm.
* The lower part of the rectum is not drained by the portal venous system.
Portal vein :
Begins : behind the neck of pancreas by union of splenic and and superior mesentric veins.
Ends by giving right and left branches wich enter the liver parenchyma.
Portal vein is unique because it begins as vein (form by tubitires) but ends as an artery (gives branches).
The Splenic vein :
Begins : at the hilum of the spleen by union of many small splenic veins.
- It passes to the right side in an straight course, in contact with the body of pancreas.
- Ends : behind the neck of the pancreas by union with superior mesentric vein to form the portal v.
- Anterior relations of the portal v. :
Infra-duodenal Part : behind the neck of pancreas
Retro-duodenal Part : behind 1st part of duode, common bile duct, gastroduodenal artery.
Supra duodenal part : It is behind common bile duct and hepatic artery proper.
