CNS · 156. Afferent and efferent cerebellar connections.

Covers the afferent and efferent connections of the cerebellum, organised by the three cerebellar peduncles. The inferior peduncle section sets out its afferent tracts in a table giving each tract's function, origin and termination, and then lists its efferent tracts. The middle peduncle is described as carrying only ponto-cerebellar afferents. The superior peduncle section lists its two afferent tracts and four efferent tracts, the efferent ones forming most of its fibres.

In this note

  1. CEREBELLAR CONNECTIONS

CEREBELLAR CONNECTIONS

Inferior Cerebrall pudencle: (ICP)

* Afferent pathways: from different regions of the CNS to the cerebellar cortex.

Middle Cerebrall Pudencle:

*Types of fibres in the M.C.P.: it contains afferent Fibres only (ponto cerebellar fibres) which arise from the pontine nuclei of the opposite side. These fibres constitute a part of the Cortico-ponto-cerebellar pathway (from the cerebral cortex to cerebellum)

Superior Cerebellar Puduncle (SCP)

*Types of fibres in the S.C.P.:

(A) Afferent fibres: only 2 tracts :

  1. (1) Anterior spinocerebellar T.
  • origin & course: see page 61
  • it carries proprioceptive impulses from the lower limb to the cerebellum.
  1. (2) Tecto-cerebellar T.
  • arises from the sup. & inf. colliculi of the tectum of midbrain.
  • it carries auditory & visual impulses to the Cerebellum.

(B) Efferent fibres: (form the majority of fibres)

  1. (1) Dentato thalamic T.:

arises from the dentate nucleus, crosses to the opposite side in the midbrain then ascends to end in the intermediate ventral nucleus of thalamus.

  1. (2) cerebelle-rubral T.:

arises from the globose & emboliform nuclei, crosses to the opposite side in the midbrain then ascends to end in the red nucleus.

  1. (3) Dentato-olivary T.:

arises from the dentate nucleus, crosses to the opposite side in the midbrain then descends to the inf. olivary nucleus in the medulla.

  1. (4) Fastigio-reticular:

arises from the Fastigial nucleus & descends uncrossed to the reticular formation of the pons & medulla.
