Internal Organs+Glands · 73. Nose. Nasal cavity. Paranasal sinuses.

Covers the external nose, including its skeleton of bones and cartilages, its skin, blood supply and nerves, then the nasal cavity: its three regions, the walls and boundaries of each half, and the three conchae and meatuses. It also lists the neighbouring structures, the vessels and innervation of the cavity, and the paranasal sinuses with their drainage openings and the nasolacrimal duct. Tables of the cell types and labelled diagrams support the text.

NOSE

The nose has a bony and cartilaginous base of a triangular shape. The skin of the nose is rich in sebaceous glands. The skin overlying the bony part is movable, while the skin overlying cartilaginous part is firmly fixed. The muscles of facial expression inserting into the nose constrict and flare the nostrils.

  • The nose is both a respiratory and olfactory organ with a role in forming the timbre of the voice
  • It includes the External nose and the nasal cavity.

External anatomy of the nose:

  • 1 Root of nose (radix nasi)
  • 2 Dorsum of nose / bridge of nose (dorsum nasi)
  • 3 Apex of nose / tip of nose (apex nasi)
  • 4 Ala of nose / wing of nose (ala nasi)
  • 5 Nostrils (nares)
  • 6 Nasal septum (septum nasi)

Supply and innervation:

Arterial supply: angular artery (facial artery), infraorbital artery (maxillary artery), supratrochlear and infratrochlear arteries (ophtalmic artery)

Venous drainage: facial vein, inferior ophthalmic vein, pterygoid plexus

Lymphatic drainage: submandibular nodes

Somatomotor (branchiomotor): nasal muscles of facial expression (facial nerve)

Somatosensory: ophthalmic nerve, maxillary nerve (trigeminal nerve)
