Anatomy · MU Sofia

Topographic · 233. Facial region. Infraorbital, zygomatic, mental and buccal regions.

Covers the facial region as a whole, including its boundary line, the superficial fascia layer (SMAS), arterial sources, and nerve supply. It then takes the infraorbital, zygomatic, mental and buccal regions in turn, giving borders, vessels, innervation and the fat pad of the cheek, with clinical notes on dental anaesthesia and zygomatic pain.

In this note

  1. FACIAL REGION
  2. INFRAORBITAL Region
  3. ZYGOMATIC Region
  4. MENTAL Region.
  5. BUCCAL Region

FACIAL REGION

  • This region occupies the anterior aspect of the head.
  • Bordered by the line passing consecutively along:
  • Superorbital margin, zygomatic bone, upper edge of zygomatic arch, Ant. to the tragus, mandible angel, then reaching the midline.
  • The fibrous componants of the superficial fascia forms a continous layer, Superficial musculo-aponeurotic System (SMAS), wich cover the facial muscles & keeps them in place.
  • Atrial Sources are:
  • Facial art.
  • Maxillary art.
  • Superficial temporal art.
  • Motor n. → Facial n. VII
  • Sensory n. → Trigeminus n. V
  • Venous Drainage:
  • to submandibular & submental nodes.

INFRAORBITAL Region

Borders:

  • Sup: lower margin of the orbit
  • Medially: Nasobuccal suture
  • Inferiorly: The line of transition of the upper lip to the upper gums.
  • laterally: Zygomatic bone
  • It coincides with a depression on the ant. surface of maxilla - Fossa canina, filled with adipose tissue.

Blood Supply:

  1. 1. Infraorbital art & v.
  2. 2. Facial art & v.
  • they pass deep to the zygomatic major m. and continue towards the medial corner of the eye. The artery runs along sulcus nasobucchalis while the vein is found lateral to it.

* Facial Muscles are found deep to the vessels.

Innervation:

  • Sensory - Infraorbital n.
  • emerging through infratemporal foramen.
  • Motor - Buccal br. of Facial n.

Clinical Significance:

  1. 1. Anesthesia - the inf. orbital n. can be used for local anesthesia during dental procedures.
