Topographic · 265. Digits of hand

Covers the layers of the finger in the hand, beginning with the thick, low-mobility palmar skin and its fibrous-septa-divided subcutaneous fat, then the thinner dorsal skin. It then describes the palmar and dorsal neurovascular bundles, the deep fascia, and the synovial sheaths of each digit, with the thumb and fifth digit differing from the second to fourth. It closes with the flexor tendons at proximal and middle phalanges and the dorsal aponeurosis, with two pictures included.

In this note

  1. DIGITS of the hand
  2. Skin & Subcutaneous layer :
  3. Neurovascular Bundles (NVBs) :
  4. Deep fascia
  5. Synovial sheaths
  6. Muscle Tendons :

Skin & Subcutaneous layer :

  1. 1. Palmar Side:
  • Thick skin with limited mobility.
  • Lacks hairs and sebaceous glands; abundant sweat glands.
  • Subcutaneous layer contains adipose tissue forming lobules separated by fibrous septa.
  • Fibrous septa connect the fibrous sheaths of the fingers to the papillary layer of the skin.
  1. 2. Dorsal Side:
  • Thin, movable skin with variable amounts of hair.
  • Loose and thin subcutaneous layer.

Neurovascular Bundles (NVBs) :

  1. 1. Palmar NVBs :

Composed of deep palmar digits a. &n.

  1. 2. Dorsal NVBs :

Composed of dorsal digits arteries & nerves.

Synovial sheaths

  • Thumb:
  • Continuous with the sheath of m. flexor hallucis longus, beginning at the proximal carpus.
  • Fifth Digit:
  • Continuous with the common synovial sheath of the palm.
  • Second to Fourth Digits:
  • Begin at the metacarpal heads and end at the distal phalanges.
  • Transition between the layers of the synovial sheath occurs between the tendons and the phalanges, forming a mesotendineum.
  • Vincula tendinum anchor the tendon and provide a pathway for blood vessels.
