2. Composition and preparation of cold-cured pink acrylic

Explains the composition of cold-cured pink acrylic, a self-curing resin used mainly for repairs, and how its powder and liquid differ from heat-cured resin through the DMPT activator. Covers the preparation steps and the dough stage, what speeds or slows setting, safety with methyl methacrylate, and the drawbacks of the cold-cured method. A component table and two pictures are included.

Introduction

Cold-cured pink acrylic, also called self-curing or quick-curing resin, polymerizes at room temperature. It has the color of the gums and is used mainly to repair broken or defective acrylic dentures, because the job needs no flask, press or water bath.

Composition

It comes as a powder and a liquid. The key difference from heat-cured resin is the activator in the liquid.

Preparation

  1. Use a very clean glass, porcelain or plastic vessel.
  2. Measure powder and liquid by volume as the manufacturer directs, usually 3:1, with the measures in the pack.
  3. Mix with a spatula and cover the vessel, so the monomer does not evaporate.
  4. Watch the mix pass through its stages until it reaches the dough stage.
  5. Apply the dough to an insulated plaster surface, or to a resin surface wetted with monomer.
  6. Let it cure in the open air, then clean and polish.

What affects setting

The chains stop growing after 10 to 20 minutes. The reaction almost stops at 5 °C. Above 30 °C it speeds up, and the temperature of the mix can reach 90 °C.
