30. Anomalies of tooth development - anomalies in number, size, shape and location of the teeth.

Covers the main groups of tooth development anomalies: abnormalities in number (hypodontia, oligodontia, anodontia, supernumerary teeth, mesiodens, neonatal teeth), size (micro- and macrodontia), and shape (germination, fusion, Carabelli's cusp, talon cusp, dens evaginatus and invaginatus, taurodontism, hypercementosis, odontoma). It then notes structural defects of enamel such as hypoplasia, hypomineralisation, hypomaturation and hyperpigmentation. The sections on localisation and form are headings only.

ANOMALIES OF TOOTH DEVELOPMENT - ANOMALIES IN NUMBER, SIZE, SHAPE AND LOCATION OF TEETH

ANOMALIES IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE TEETH ARE DUE TO:

  • Abnormalities in the number of teeth
  • Abnormalities in the size of teeth
  • Defects in the shape of the teeth
  • Defects in localization of the teeth
  • Abnormalities in the structure of teeth

Anomalies in tooth development were due to errors in genetic control, effect of the environment or due to many syndromes.

ABNORMALITIES IN THE NUMBER OF TEETH

  • Due to different etiological factors that occur during the initiation and proliferation of the dentition.
  • Represents the result of genetic factors, influence of environment and result of evolution

Types of anomalies in the number of teeth includes:

  • HYPODONTIA= several missing teeth
  • OLIGODONTIA= more than 6 missing teeth
  • ANODONTIA= missing all teeth
  • PSEUDO-HYPODONTIA= lack of teeth due to retention in the bone

Anomalies occur die to a destruction in the dental lamina from the early stages of embryogenesis. Destruction is caused by local factors, systemic factor or genetic factors

Other types of abnormalities in the number of teeth includes:

  • SUPERNUMERARY TEETH= mainly permanent maxillary teeth are subjected, usually not symmetrical
  • MESIODENS= rare case of supernumerary tooth rpesent in the mid-line between the 2 central incisors, which prevents eruption of permanent teeth
  • NEONATAL TEETH= extra teeth present at birth, resulting from disturbances from bud stage of tooth development

Abnormalities in number of teeth are more common in females, most common with 3rd molar
