34. Endodontium – definition; components of the root canal system.
Covers the endodontium as the pulp and surrounding dentin treated as one unit, and how it links to the periodontium through the apical foramen and lateral, accessory and furcation canals. It then walks through the pulp chamber parts, root canal thirds and cross-sectional shapes, and a table of ramifications such as the apical delta and isthmus. Apical anatomy follows, with the constriction, major foramen and cementodentinal junction, ending with working length and irrigation points.
Topic 34 of 53 in the MU Sofia syllabus for Preclinics of Conservative Dental Medicine (Dental Medicine, Year 3). The free AceMed note covers it in 7 sections, about 874 words (7 min of reading), with 17 flashcards.

Introduction
The endodontium is the pulp with the dentin around it. The space the pulp fills, the pulp cavity, is a branching system rather than a single tube; its anatomy decides where the pulp is reached, where instruments must stop and which areas only the irrigant can clean.
Endodontium – definition
The endodontium (pulp–dentin complex) is the dental pulp and the surrounding dentin, regarded as one unit. Both arise from the dental papilla and the odontoblast processes run in the dentinal tubules, so every stimulus to dentin also reaches the pulp (pulp histology: topic 50).
The endodontium communicates with the periodontium (gingiva, periodontal ligament, cementum, alveolar bone) through:
the apical foramen – vessels, nerves and the main route of infection;
lateral, accessory and furcation canals;
dentinal tubules exposed where cementum is missing;
A necrotic pulp can therefore cause a lesion beside the root or in the furcation that mimics periodontal disease, and a deep pocket can reach the pulp (endo-perio lesions).
