161. Third ventricle.

Covers the third ventricle as a fluid-filled cavity in the midline within the diencephalon, with its choroid plexus producing cerebrospinal fluid. Describes its anterior, posterior, lateral and floor boundaries, including the links to the lateral ventricles and the cerebral aqueduct. Ends with the four recesses, the supra-optic, infundibular, pineal and suprapineal, and where each lies.

THIRD VENTRICLE

  • The third ventricle is one of the fluid-filled cavities within the brain.

* Within the ventricles the are specialized structures wich called Choroid Plexus that produce cerebrospinal fluid.

Location:

  • Located in the midline between the two halves (hemispheres) of the thalamus.
  • It is a part of the diencephalon.

Boundaries:

  • → Anteriorly - the third ventricle communicate with the lateral ventricle through the interventricular foramena.
  • → Posteriorly - it narrows and continues as the cerebral aqueduct, connecting to the fourth ventricle in the brainstem.
  • → Lateraly - formed by the thalamus on each side.
  • → Floor - Composed of the hypothalamus.

Recesses:

  • The cavity of the 3rd ventricle extends into 4 recesses:

1. The Supra-optic recess:

located superior to the optic chiasm & inferior to the lamina terminalis.

2. The Infundibular recess

Is found on the floor of the third ventricle, between the optic chiasm and the mamillary body.

3. The pineal recess:

Extends posteriorly, project into the pineal body between the cranial & caudal lamina of the pineal gland.

4. The suprapineal recess.

Located between the superior portion of the pineal gland & the inferi r aspect of the tela choroidea

↳ Combination of pia mater & ependymal cells
