Anatomy (Topographic) · MU Sofia

268. Posterior region of thigh.

Covers the shape and skin of the posterior thigh, including the thickness and mobility of the skin and the subcutaneous fat layer. It then describes the posterior cutaneous nerve of the thigh and its course, along with twigs from the obturator and lateral cutaneous nerves. The superficial venous network, with the femoropopliteal vein as the main pathway, follows, then the deep fascia and the three hamstring muscles and how they diverge distally to form the borders of the popliteal fossa. The note ends with a brief heading on the sciatic nerve.

In this note

  1. Posterior thigh Region :
  2. Nerves
  3. Venous Network :
  4. Deep fascia (fascia lata)
  5. Muscles :
  6. Vascular Supply:
  7. Sciatic Nerve.

Posterior thigh Region :

  1. 1. Shape and Skin:
  • Convex in both vertical and horizontal directions, more pronounced horizontally.
  • Skin is fairly thick with limited mobility, especially superiorly and laterally.
  • Sparse hairs present.
  1. 2. Subcutaneous Layer:
  • Moderately thick adipose tissue.
  • Thinner proximally and thicker distally.

Nerves

  1. 1. N. cutaneus femoris posterior:
  • Distributed within subcutaneous tissue.
  • Courses in the groove between m. biceps femoris and m. semitendinosus, just deep to the fascia.
  • Sometimes runs in a canal within the fascia.
  1. 2. Additional Nerve Branches:
  • Twigs from n. obturatorius and n. cutaneus femoris lateralis penetrate medially and laterally.

Venous Network :

Superficial Veins:

  • Form a network with a major venous pathway often being v. femoropoplitea.
  • V. femoropoplitea connects v. saphena parva with the gluteal veins and the deep veins of the thigh. small

Deep fascia (fascia lata)

Characteristics:

  • Thicker laterally.
  • Pierced by branches of n. cutaneus femoris posterior, which pass immediately deep to the fascia.

Muscles :

Major Muscles:

  • M. biceps femoris.
  • M. semitendinosus.
  • M. semimembranosus.

Muscle Arrangement:

  • Adhere tightly in the upper two-thirds of the thigh.
  • Diverge distally:
  • M. biceps femoris diverts laterally.
  • M. semimembranosus and m. semitendinosus divert medially.
  • Form the upper borders of the popliteal fossa.
