Explains immune memory as the adaptive system's faster, stronger response to previously met pathogens, contrasting the slow primary response with the secondary one. It then covers memory B and T cells, including germinal centre selection, the extra-follicular and germinal-centre pathways, class switching and somatic hypermutation, and vaccination, and closes with a set of memory aids.
Topic 55 of 105 in the MU Sofia syllabus for Biology (Medicine, Year 1). The free AceMed note covers it in 9 sections, about 999 words (7 min of reading), with 16 flashcards.

Immune memory
1. Definition and Importance
Immune memory refers to the immune system's ability to recognize and respond more efficiently to pathogens it has previously encountered.
This capacity defines the adaptive immune system and is crucial for long-term protection from reinfection.
Types of Immune Responses
2. Primary Immune Response
This is the immune system’s first response to a new antigen.
It is relatively slow because the number of specific lymphocytes (B and T cells) that can recognize a new antigen is initially very small.
When the antigen is detected, these few specific lymphocytes must undergo clonal expansion, a process involving multiple cell divisions, before mounting a full response.
While this expansion occurs over several days, the body relies primarily on innate immunity for protection.
3. Secondary Immune Response
This response targets antigens the body has already encountered.
It is faster, stronger, and more accurate than the primary response.
This improved reaction is due to the presence of memory cells that are primed to recognize and attack the familiar antigen quickly.
