Approaches for treatment of common lung cancer
Treatment depends on type, spread, patient status. Treatments include palliative care, surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Targeted therapy is becoming more prevalent as well.
Surgery
- In most cases of NSCLC a lung lobectomy is the surgical treatment of choice
- In SCLC Chemotherapy/radiotherapy is more typically used
Radiotherapy
- Often given with chemotherapy. Curative in NSCLC patients where surgery is not an option (second line). SHOULD NOT BE USED AS ADJUVANT THERAPY FOR CURATIVE NSCLC SURGERY.
- For SCLC cases, radiotherapy and chemotherapy is first line treatment, external beam radiotherapy is the recommended course of action
- Low dose radiotherapy is given for palliative care in both cancer forms
Chemotherapy
- SCLC commonly uses chemotherapy combination cisplatin and etoposide + radiotherapy at all stages
- In NSCLC adjuvant chemotherapy improves survival by 4% at five years for stage II or more. Stage I there is limited evidence of chemotherapy being useful
Targeted therapy
- Several targeted therapies include: Erlotinib + gefitinib (tyrosine kinase inhibitors). Denosumab (monoclonal antibody) - tumor must have EGFR or ALK mutations for this to wokr.
