108. Popliteal artery. Arteries of the leg and foot

Explains the popliteal artery, beginning at the adductor hiatus as a continuation of the femoral artery and ending at the lower border of popliteus by dividing into the anterior and posterior tibial arteries. It describes the relations of the vein and nerve at the upper, middle and lower popliteal fossa, then lists the genicular, sural and patellar anastomosis branches. It then covers the posterior and anterior tibial arteries and their branches, including the fibular, malleolar, calcaneal and plantar branches and the dorsal pedis artery.

POPLITEAL ARTERY

  • Begins as a continuation of the femoral artery at the adductor hiatus.
  • It crosses the popliteal fossa (it is the deepest structure in it “artery→vein→nerve”)
  • Ends at the lower border of popliteus muscle, by giving anterior and posterior tibial arteries
  • At the upper part of the popliteal fossa the vein + nerve are lateral to it.
  • 〃 〃 middle part 〃 〃 〃 superficial to it.
  • 〃 〃 lower part 〃 〃 〃 medial to it.
  • Travels between the two heads of gastrocnemius muscle.
