Anatomy Bones and Muscles · MU Pleven

204. Regio nasalis, regio oralis.

Covers the boundaries of the nasal region, the parts of the external nose, and the nasal cavity with its conchae and meatuses, including which paranasal sinuses and ducts open into each meatus. Also sets out the walls, ceiling, floor and septum of the cavity, illustrated by oblique and sagittal sections, and closes with two clinical notes on cerebrospinal fluid leakage from the nose and bleeding from Kiesselbach's plexus.

  1. NASAL REGION
  2. Nasal Cavity:

NASAL REGION

The nasal region is demarcated superior-ly by the line connecting the medial ends of the eyebrows, inferiorly by a horizontal line passing through the lowest point of the nasal septum, and laterally by the na-sobuccal sulcus.

  1. The external nose consists of bony and cartilaginous parts, which can be distinguished by palpation: the bony nose is rigid, while the cartilaginous one is flexible. The parts of the external nose—radix, dorsum, apex, alae and nares—are easily observed.

Nasal Cavity:

Nasal conchae and meatuses

The location of the paranasal sinuses and their openings

Conchae

  1. 1 Superior nasal concha
  2. 2 Middle nasal concha
  3. 3 Inferior nasal concha

Meatuses and openings of the paranasal sinuses

  1. 4 Superior nasal meatus – is located between the ceiling of the nasal cavity and middle nasal concha
  2. 4.1 Sphenoidal sinus
  3. 4.2 Posterior ethmoidal cells
  4. 5 Middle nasal meatus – is located between the middle and inferior nasal concha
  5. 5.1 Anterior and middle ethmoidal cells
  6. 5.2 Frontal sinus
  7. 5.3 Maxillary sinus
  8. 6 Inferior nasal meatus – is located between the inferior nasal concha and the floor of the nasal cavity
  9. 6.1 Nasolacrimal duct
  10. 7 Common nasal meatus – is located between the medial edges of the nasal conchae and the nasal septum
  11. 8 Nasopharyngeal meatus – is located between the dorsal edges of the nasal conchae and the choanae

The nasal cavity is a segmented air-filled space located behind the nose. It consists of the nasal vestibule and the bony nasal cavity. It is divided into left and right parts by the nasal septum. The lateral walls of the nasal cavity are the medial walls of the orbits. The nasal conchae project into the nasal cavity from the lateral wall.
