Anatomy Bones and Muscles · MU Pleven

205. Regio buccalis, regio parotideomasseterica.

Covers the boundaries of the oral region, then the oral vestibule with its lips, cheeks and the structures it contains, such as the parotid duct opening and the frenula. It goes on to the parotideomasseteric region: its borders, the shape and extent of the parotid gland, the course of the facial nerve through the gland, and the layers from skin to parotid fascia.

In this note

  1. ORAL REGION
  2. Boundaries:
  3. PAROTIDEOMASSETERIC Region

Boundaries:

Sup.: horizontal line passing through the lowest point of the nasal septum

Inf.: Mentolabial sulcus.

lat.: Nasolabial sulcus.

  • Parts:
  1. 1. The oral vestibule:
  • External borders:
  • ↳ lips: 2 fleshy folds surrounding the oral orifice they accommodate orbicularis oris muscle. they contain nerves, vessels & glands. Sensory inner: by branches of infraorbital n. & mental n.
  1. 2. Oral cavity Proper
  • ↳ cheeks: they are continuous with lips at nasolabial grooves.
  • Their muscle is buccinator
  • Internally they are lined by mucos membrane.
  • Externally they are covered by skin, buccal pad of fat, and buccopharyngeal fascia
  • Internal borders:
  • ↳ Teeth
  • ↳ Gums

The vestibule contains the following:

  1. 1- Opening of the parotid duct.
  2. 2- Superior labia frenulum
  • ↳ connect sup. lip to the gum
  1. 3. Inferior labia frenulum.
  2. 4. Maxillary tuberosity
  3. 5. Fornix

PAROTIDEOMASSETERIC Region

This region is bounded superiorly by arcus zygomaticus, inferiorly by basis mandibulae, posteriorly by porus acusticus externus and processus mastoideus, and anteriorly by the anterior margin of m. masseter. The parotid gland is located here. Enveloped in a sheath, the parotid gland has the shape of a triangular pyramid, with a base parallel to the skin surface and an apex that attaches to processus styloideus. The anterior end of the gland overlies m. masseter. Its posterior end reaches the anterior edge of m. sternocleidomastoideus. Its upper end comes close to arcus zygomaticus, and the lower end descends to the upper neck. The gland has a medial process, which comes in close proximity to the lateral pharyngeal wall, approaching major neurovascular structures found in the parapharyngeal space: a. carotis interna, v. jugularis interna, CNs IX, X, XI, and XII, The major bulk of the parotid gland occupies the fossa retromandibularis.

The facial n. passes through the parotid gland & gives rise to 5 terminal branches.

The parotid duct is found in the ant. part of the region under the mesenteric fascia.

  • Layers:
  1. 1. Skin
  2. 2. Superficial fascia contains:
  • ↳ Adipose layer
  • ↳ SMAS
  • ↳ Sensory nerves (auricular n.)
  1. 3. Parotid gland (wrapped up in parotid fascia)

At the ant. margin of the parotid gland, its fascia transition into masseteric fascia.
