Anatomy Bones and Muscles · MU Pleven

224. Regio deltoidea

Covers the deltoid region of the upper arm: its boundaries, the skin and cutaneous nerves, the muscle and its fascia, and the subdeltoid space with its nerve and vessels. It then describes the arterial supply, the two bursae, and the deeper structures lying beneath and in front of the muscle. Closes with clinical notes on deltoid injuries and its use as an intramuscular injection site.

  1. DELTOID Region
  2. Clinical Significance :

DELTOID Region

  1. 1. Boundaries:
  • Superiorly: Acromion, clavicle, and scapular spine.
  • Inferiorly: Deltoid muscle's insertion on the upper arm bone (humerus).
  1. 2. Skin and Nerves:
  • Skin is smooth and movable.
  • Nerves:
  • N. cutaneous brachii lateralis superior (from armpit).
  • N. supraclaviculares laterales (from neck).
  1. 3. Muscles and Fascia:
  • Deltoid muscle's outer surface covered by fascia.
  • Fascia extends inwards between muscle fibers.
  • Deep layer attaches to shoulder and back fascia.
  1. 4. Subdeltoid Space:
  • Contains nerves (n. axillaris) and blood vessels (a. et v. circumflexa humeri posterior).
  • Accessed through a hole in the shoulder muscle's back border.
  1. 5. Blood Vessels:
  • A. profunda brachii and a. circumflexa humeri posterior supply blood.
  • Smaller vessels (a. and v. circumflexa humeri anterior) enter the front part.
  1. 6. Bursae:
  • Two bursae (fluid-filled sacs) above the space: bursa subdeltoidea and bursa subacromialis.
  1. 7. Deeper Structures:
  • Beneath deltoid muscle's back part: supraspinatus, infraspinatus, and teres major muscles.
  • Front part covers tendons and muscles: long head of biceps, subscapularis, coracobrachialis, short head of biceps, and pectoralis minor.
