46. Muscles and fascias of the foot

Covers the muscles of the foot, split into extrinsic and intrinsic groups, then goes through the dorsal compartment and the plantar layers one by one, with tables giving origin, insertion, innervation and function for each muscle. Also outlines the fascia of the foot, including the extensor, flexor and fibular retinacula with the tendon canals they form, and the plantar aponeurosis.

In this note

  1. FOOT MUSCLES (intrinsic muscles)
  2. FOOT FASCIA

FOOT MUSCLES (intrinsic muscles)

The muscles acting on the foot can be divided into extrinsic & intrinsic muscles. = hand

  • Extrinsic muscle : muscles that originate outside of a specific region and insert onto structures within that region.
  • Intrinsic m : originate & insert onto the same region.

Dorsal compartments :

Planter Compartment :

1st layer :

"AFA"

2nd layer :

Dorsal muscles (intrinsic)

Dorsal muscles (extrinsic)

FOOT FASCIA

The fascia of the leg continues down and form a thickened fascia, band of fibers that protects and organize the tendons going down to the foot. these band called Retinaculum.

1. Superior Extensor Retinaculum

2. Inferior Extensor Retinaculum :

form 4 canals for the tendons of the extensor muscles :

  1. 1st canal → tendons of tibialis anterior
  2. 2nd canal → Extensor Hallucis longus
  3. 3rd → Dorsalis Pedis art. / vein & fibular n.
  4. 4th → Extensor Digitorum Longus

3. Flexor Retinaculum (on the medial side)

forms 4 canals :

  1. 1st → tendons of tibialis posterior
  2. 2nd → tendons of flexor digitorum longus
  3. 3rd → tibialis posterior art. / vein & tibial n.
  4. 4th → tendons of flexor hallucis longus

4. Superior & inferior fibular Retinaculum (lateral side)

they contain tendons of the fibularis longus & fibularis brevis

- Planter Aponeurosis (Planter side)
