65. Larynx – skeletal and proper muscles. Laryngeal cavity.
Covers the larynx as a musculo-ligamentous structure, its single and paired cartilages, the extrinsic and intrinsic ligaments, and the subdivisions of the laryngeal cavity. Also outlines the intrinsic muscles in a table giving origin, insertion, innervation and function, followed by the blood supply and the recurrent and superior laryngeal nerves.
Topic 64 of 236 in the MU Pleven syllabus for Anatomy Bones and Muscles (Medicine, Year 2). The free AceMed note covers it in 8 sections, about 571 words (6 min of reading), with 10 flashcards.

LARYNX
It is a hollow musculo-ligamentous structure with a cartilaginous framework.
Site: it present in the front of the neck (anterior to the phalynx), and extends btw. C4 and C6 vertebrae.
The cavity of the larynx continuous with the trachea, and above opens into the pharynx
Functions:
1. Acts as valve to close lower respiratory tract protecting it from passage of foreign bodies
2. An instrument for sound production.
Cartilages of the larynx:
→ 3 Single:
Thyroid: formed of 2 plates connected anteriorly giving (Adam's apple).
Cricoid : is ring like and continue below larynx as the trachea.
Epiglottis: a leaf like cartilage behind the tongue, closes the laryngeal inlet during deglutition.
→ 3 paired:
Arytenoids:triangular in shape, having apex, base, and two processes (vocal process anteriorly, and muscular process laterally. They articulate with cricoid cartilage.
Corniculates:conical cartilages. Their bases articulate with apices of arytenoid cartilages.
Cuneiforms: club-shaped cartilages They are suspended by the fibro-elastic membrane of the larynx.
