Steroids – characteristics, representatives.

Introduces steroids as tetracyclic derivatives with their functional groups and nucleus numbering, then covers cholesterol and its role in vitamin D formation and atherosclerosis. Also describes ergosterol as a provitamin, bile acids and their amphipathic, emulsifying action, and the adrenal corticosteroids and sex hormones.

TOPIC 47 STERIODS

Definition - Steroids are polysaccharide molecules, found in all plants and animals; they can be synthesized from terpenes by a complex set of reactions.

Steroids are defined as compounds which are derivatives of tetracyclic hydrocarbons.

Cyclopentanoperhydrophenantherene - The four rings are identified by the 1st 4 letters of the alphabet beginning with the ring at the lower left, and carbon atoms are numbered beginning at the A ring.

Steroids contain a variety of functions. Functional groups OH, C = O, C = C. And aromatic rings.

Steroid nucleus is found in the structure of sterols and Vitamins. Bile acids Drugs and poison.

Cholesterol

The most abundant steroid present in humans and the most important one, as well as all the other steroids that arise from it.

In your mind, the central nervous system has the highest cholesterol content, and the brain has 10% of the cholesterol.

The principal constituting that forms the plaque that binds up all the walls of the arteries and restricts the flow of blood in the circulatory disorders The plaque that binds up all the walls of the arteries and restricts the flow of blood in the circulatory disorders known as atherosclerosis.

Cholesterol plays a vital biological role in the formation of vitamin D, bile acid, and steroid hormones.

7 Dihydro cholesterol.

Steroids are very closely related to cholesterol. Animals can convert cholesterol to 7 dehydro cholesterol. It is formed by enzymatic oxidation of cholesterol and has a conjugated dyne unit in its B ring.

7D hydro cholesterol is present in the skin tissue where it is transformed into vitamin D3 by sunlight. Induce photochemical reaction and it is. A pro vitamin of vitamin D.

Vitamin D3 is a key compound in the process by which calcium is absorbed by the intestine. Low levels of vitamin D3 lead to calcium concentration in the body that as insufficient to support proper growth of the bone , which results in disease called rickets.

Where the winter sun is weak, children may not be exposed to enough of its light to convert the 7-dehydrogenase cholesterol in the skin to vitamin D at a sufficient level too. Promote growth of the bones.
