Cardiovascular system · 111. Aorta

Covers the aorta's course in segments, from the ascending aorta and aortic arch through the thoracic and abdominal descending parts, with vertebral levels and where each segment ends. Also outlines the branches of the ascending aorta (the right and left coronary arteries, with their origins and territories), the arch (brachiocephalic trunk, left common carotid and left subclavian arteries) and the descending branches, presented as a branching outline with diagrams.

  1. 1 Ascending aorta (aorta ascendens) – T4–T3
  • – arises from the left ventricle and continues as the aortic arch in the superior mediastinum
  1. 2 Aortic arch (arcus aortae) – to the top of T2
  • – passes dorsally and to the left in the superior mediastinum
  1. 3 Descending aorta (aorta descendens) – T3–L4
  2. 3.1 Thoracic aorta (aorta thoracica) – T3–T12
  • – passes on the left side of the vertebral column and then in front of vertebrae in the inferior mediastinum
  • – passes through the aortic hiatus of the diaphragm at the level of T12 and changes here into the abdominal aorta
  1. 3.2 Abdominal aorta (aorta abdominalis) – T12–L4
  • – passes in front of the vertebral column inside the retroperitoneal space
  • – bifurcates into the right and left common iliac arteries at the level of L4
