Cardiovascular system · 112-114. External and Internal carotid artery +( Opthalmic Artery)

Covers the common carotid bifurcation and the course of the external and internal carotid arteries, with the internal carotid's branches to the brain and eye. Lists the ophthalmic artery's origin, its course through the optic canal and its numerous branches to the orbit, eyelids, forehead and nose. Gives the external carotid's anterior, medial, posterior and terminal branches, followed by a list of borders for the region.

  2. INTERNAL CAROTID ARTERY
  3. OPHTHALMIC ARTERY
  4. EXTERNAL CAROTID

COMMON CAROTID ARTERY

  1. 1 Common carotid artery (arteria carotis communis)
  • – ascends along the trachea
  • – bifurcates within the carotid triangle at the level of c4
  1. 2 External carotid artery (arteria carotis externa)
  • – passes ventromedially
  • – has eight main branches within the neck and head
  1. 3 Internal carotid artery (arteria carotis interna)
  • – passes dorsolaterally giving off no branches within the neck
  • – enters the cranium to give off branches supplying the brain and eyeball

The common carotid artery is a major blood vessel that plays a crucial role in supplying oxygenated blood to the head and neck. There are two common carotid arteries in the human body, one on the right side and one on the left sid

INTERNAL CAROTID ARTERY

O: Ascends along the neck and enters the base of the skull through the carotid canal.

S: Supplies blood to the brain and eyes

Branches :

  • * Opthalmic Artery
  • S: Supplies blood to the eyes (retina, optic nerve, & surrounding structures)
  • Post. communicating artery
  • Connects the internal carotid artery with the post. cerebral art.
  • from the vertebral arteries which are branches of subclavian artery
  • Ant. Choroidal artery
  • Supplies the choroid plexus of the lateral and thired ventricles in the brain.
  • * Ante. Cerebral artery
  • Supplies the medial and superior parts of the cerebral hemispheres
  • * Middle Cerebral art.
  • Supplies the lateral convexity of the cerebral hemispheres.

* Terminal branches
