PNS · 219. Blood supply of the eye.

Covers the arterial supply of the orbit and eyeball, beginning with the ophthalmic artery as a branch of the internal carotid and its nine named branches in the order they arise, including the central retinal artery and posterior ciliary arteries. It also gives a mnemonic (MCLESSI) for the branches, a short table for the central retinal artery's course, and the venous drainage through the superior and inferior ophthalmic veins with their routes out of the orbit.

  1. BLOOD SUPPLY of the eye:
  2. Vessels :
  3. Veins :

Vessels :

  • The atrial supply to the structures of the orbit including the eyeball is by the opthalmic artery
  • The opthalmic art:
  • ↳ Is a branch of the internal carotid artery.
  • ↳ Enters the orbit through the optic canal with the optic nerve.
  • ↳ In the orbit, it gives offs several branches :
  1. 1. Lacrimal artery : on the lateral side, suppling the lacrimal gland, muscle & the lateral side of the eyelid.
  2. 2. Central Retinal Art :
  • travels within the optic nerve sheath alongside the optic n
  • Penetrates the eye through the optic disc
  • Supplies the layers of the retina
  1. 3. Posterior ciliary arteries (long & short)
  • Enters the eyeball posteriorly, piercing the sclera, & supplying structures inside the eyeball.
  1. 4. Muscular arteries : supplying the intrinsic muscles of the eyeball
  2. 5. Supra-orbital art : exits the orbit through the supra-orbital foramen with the supra-orbital n. . Supplies the forehead & scalp.
  3. 6. Posterior Ethmoidal art : exits the orbit through the posterior ethmoidal foramen to supply the ethmoidal cells & nasal cavity
  4. 7. Anterior Ethmoidal art : " " " through the ant. ethmoidal foramen, enters the cranial cavity giving off the anterior meningeal branch, and continues into the nasal cavity supplying the septum & lateral wall
  5. 8. Dorsal Nasal art : leaves the orbit to supply the upper surface of the nose.
  6. 9. Supratrochlear art : leaves the orbit with the supratrochlear n. suppling the forehead.
