Topographic · 270.271 Regions of leg.

Explains the boundaries of the leg region, from the tibial tuberosity down to a line round the ankle just below the malleoli, and how it is divided into anterior, lateral and posterior compartments. Covers the neurovascular contents of each compartment, the fibular canal, the tendinous arch of soleus and the musculofibular canal of Hyrtl. Also describes the skin, fascia and superficial vessels and nerves of the anterior and posterior leg, including the course of the great and small saphenous veins and the sural nerve.

In this note

  1. LEG Region (CRUS region)
  2. Boundaries:
  3. Anterior leg region:
  4. Posterior leg Region

Boundaries:

  1. 1. Superior Boundary: Circular line passing through the tuberositas tibiae.
  2. 2. Inferior Boundary: Circular line encircling the ankle, just distal to the malleoli.

Divisions:

  • Anterior Compartment:
  • Bounded by septum intermuscular cruris anterius (attached to anterior margin of the fibula).
  • Lateral Compartment:
  • Located between anterior and posterior septa, contains mm. peronei.
  • Posterior Compartment:
  • Bounded by septum intermuscular cruris posterius (attached to posterior margin of the fibula).

At the Level of the Malleoli:

  • Narrow strip divided into:
  • Regio talocruralis anterior.
  • Regio talocruralis posterior.

The crural fascia divides the leg into three osteofascial regions: the anterior, posterior and lateral compartments of the leg.

  1. 1 Anterior compartment of leg (compartimentum cruris anterius)
  • anterior group of muscles of leg
  1. 1.1 Anterior tibial vessels and deep fibular nerve
  • anterior tibial artery and veins go through an opening in the interosseous membrane of the leg (middle tibiofibular ligament)
  • deep fibular nerve emerges from the fibular canal through an opening in the anterior intermuscular septum of the leg
  1. 2 Posterior compartment of leg (compartimentum cruris posterius)
  • posterior group of muscles of leg
  1. 2.1 Posterior tibial vessels and tibial nerve
  • neurovascular bundle courses under the tendinous arch of the soleus and between the deep and superficial muscles of posterior group of the leg
  1. 2.2 Fibular vessels
  • run in the musculofibular canal that lies between the shaft of the fibula and flexor hallucis longus
  1. 3 Lateral group of muscles of leg (compartimentum cruris laterale)
  • lateral group of muscles of leg
  • does not contain a neurovascular bundle
  1. 3.1 Superficial fibular nerve
  • descends between the fibular muscles and pierces to the subcutaneous tissue in the distal part of the lateral compartment
