Covers the middle ear as an air-filled space in the temporal bone, split into the tympanic cavity and the epitympanic recess, and its basic role in passing tympanic membrane vibrations to the inner ear. It then goes wall by wall through the roof, floor, lateral, medial, anterior and posterior boundaries, naming the structures each contains, such as the promontory, the oval and round windows, the facial canal prominence and the pyramidal eminence. Two figures accompany the text.
