38. Muscles of the arm Arm fascia

Covers the anterior and posterior muscles of the arm, going through coracobrachialis, biceps brachii, brachialis and triceps brachii with their origins, insertions, nerves, actions and blood supply. Tables set out the biceps and triceps heads side by side. It then describes the brachial fascia, its continuity with the deltoid, pectoral and antebrachial fascia, and its attachments at the shoulder and elbow.

  4. BRACHIAL FASCIA
  5. Attachments & Continuity:

Anterior group:

1 Coracobrachialis m.

  • O: Apex of cricoid process of the scapula.
  • I: Medial side of the midshaft of the humerus.
  • F: Flexes the arm
  • B.S: Muscular br. of the brachial art.

2 Biceps brachii

  • I: Radial tuberosity
  • F: strong flexion & supination of the forearm.
  • B.S: Brachial art.

I: The long and short heads converge to form a single tendon, which inserts onto the radial tuberosity.

As the tendon enters the forearm, a flat sheet of connective tissue (the bicipital aponeurosis) fans out from the medial side of the tendon to blend with deep fascia covering the anterior compartment of the forearm.

N: Musculocutaneus n. (C5 - C6)

3 Brachialis:

  • O: Distal half of the anterior aspect of the humerus
  • *Lies beneath the biceps brachii
  • I: Tuberosity of the ulna.
  • N: Musculocutaneus n. (small lateral part by Radial n.)
  • F: Flexes the forearm at the elbow joint.
