Biochemistry

Biochemistry is taught in Year 2 of Medicine at the Medical University of Sofia, and its syllabus runs through 70 topics. It opens with proteins and nucleic acids and enzymes, moves through biological oxidation and the metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids and nucleotides, then covers porphyrins, haemoglobin and the integration of metabolism. Later chapters deal with DNA, gene expression and recombinant DNA, hormones, signalling, the cell cycle and cancer, and finally vitamins and tissue biochemistry.
